An 82-year-old grandmother of five did a 5k recently in memory of her daughter who tragically died of a rare form of cancer last November.

Netta Finlayson from Rosslyn Road in Bearsden walked the Glasgow ‘Race For Life’ on Sunday, May 4 for her daughter Lesley who lost her battle with an unusual type of malignant melanoma (mucosal) aged 53, after being diagnosed just one year earlier.

Netta walked the route from Glasgow Green as part of the ‘family Finlayson’ team. She was accompanied by Lesley’s son Cameron (20), Lesley’s sister Janice Alston (49) from Milngavie and Janice’s daughter Catriona (20).

They have raised almost £1,000 so far with money still coming in.

Janice said: “It was emotional at times because I did the 5k with Lesley and our cousin Anne Cooper last year.

“My mum is amazing, she’s very fit for her age and she’s always been a fast walker, we ran to keep up with her when we were children!

“Lesley had a particularly nasty strain of cancer and that’s why we wanted to do this - it’s so important that more research is carried out to find out more about rarer types of cancer and possible treatments.

“Lesley and I were very close, she was beautiful, kind and fun loving and it’s a tragedy that she’s not here with us now.

“We all miss her terribly.”
