Future looked bright

The future looked rosy for the West of Scotland Laundry at the beginning of 1904.

In its January 1 issue the Herald reflected on the year that had just gone by — and discussed the prospects for the 12 months ahead.

The paper was gratified to note that business had been steady despite competition from similar establishments that had opened up around Glasgow. ''In face of so much competition the bulk of trade done here compares favourably with the former year, and we are confident that the proprietors are well prepared to meet still keener competition,'' said the Herald.

There was, however, after many years to be one form of competition that not even a well-equipped laundry like the West of Scotland could match. Its business disappeared in the years following the Second World War as home washing machines became commonplace.

The laundry eventually closed and flats now stand on the site at Clober Road at its junction with Craigton Road. The builders reported problems with the foundations when they uncovered a well used by the laundry as an alternative water source when the Allander was low.

It was not all work and no play for the workers of the West of Scotland Laundry. The Herald of November 3, 1905 reported: ''The employees of the West of Scotland Laundry brought off their annual dance in the Burgh Hall on Monday evening when a lively company negotiated the movements of Petronella to a chorus of Hoochs, which are common expressions of glee at an assembly in Milngavie.''
