Folklore will be the focus of Local History Week

SPOOKY tales and superstitions are the focus of this year’s Local History Week.

Communities are being asked to get involved to help collate folklore from throughout the district.

The annual event, organised by East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture Trust (EDLC), is running from Saturday, March 2 until Saturday, March 9.

With a focus on storytelling and gathering activities, the community is being asked to pass on any stories and tales told over the years, or passed down through their family, about places, buildings and people in the local area.

This could be a ghost story, popular belief, tall tale or local superstition.

Many of these stories, never written down or recorded, will be on display at the Brookwood Library, Bearsden and tyhe William Patrick Library in Kirkintilloch.

The collected stories and tales will also be added to the local history collections at these two libraries.

Councillor Stewart MacDonald, Chair of East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture Trust, said: “If you have an interesting story or tall tale and you would like it recorded, just pop in to any East Dunbartonshire library and ask one of the library staff for a Superstition and Folklore – tell us your local tales form.

“It will be great to have these stories recorded for future generations to enjoy, so please do fill in a form and hand it into your local library.”

The full Local History Week programme will soon be available, detailing a wide range of activities and events across East Dunbartonshire throughout the week - exhibitions, storytelling, walks and talks, archive film shows, and more. Look out for details in libraries and other cultural venues, and on the EDLC website, www.edlc.co.uk nearer the time.
