Floral display marks organists’ centenary

A FLORAL display has been set up outside Boclair House in Bearsden to commemorate the centenary of the Glasgow Society of Organists.

Several members of the society are from Bearsden and Milngavie with some serving as organists in local churches, including the group’s vice-president, Nairn Young, who is also the organist in Bearsden Cross Church.

Mr Young will become the next president in April 2012.

Several distinguished local musicians have been presidents of the society.

These include Dr. T.C.L. Pritchard (president in 1920), organist of the former Bearsden North Church, who wrote the harmony for the tune Crimond that is associated with the 23rd Psalm (the Lord’s My Shepherd) and Harry MacGill (1947), who was the organist for many years of New Kilpatrick Church and founder of the Bearsden Choir and New Kilpatrick Singers.

There is also Wilfred Norris (1967) who was the organist of the former Bearsden South Church and was the head of music at the former Jordanhill Teacher Training College.
