Extra cash for East Dunbartonshire Council to help people into affordable homes
A FUNDING boost for East Dunbartonshire Council will be used to help families into new social homes.
The extra cash, £718,000, from the Scottish Government, comes on top of the housing budget already allocated to the council. It is part of a total funding package across Scotland of an extra £40 million for housing, which is expected to deliver around 1,000 homes, mainly for social rent, and support up to 700 jobs in construction and related sectors, over the next two years.
East Dunbartonshire Council will allocate the money to help meet the housing needs in their area.
Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, said: “This funding is good news for East Dunbartonshire - helping to deliver affordable homes that meet people’s needs, a central focus of our housing polices and a principle that underpins everything we do.
“Our ambition is to deliver 20,000 social homes, including 5,000 council homes, as part of wider plans to make more than 30,000 affordable homes available during this Parliamentary term.
“Investing in new homes helps people into work by creating a jobs spin-off with the employment and training that takes place during construction.
“This funding illustrates that despite the 26 per cent cut to our capital budget by Westminster, the Scottish Government is determined to continue investing in new social housing.
“If we want a strong economy, we must have access to all of Scotland’s resources, not just the portion of Scotland’s resources that the UK Government chooses to give us.”
