Esteemed medic is going to talk about happiness in Milngavie
ONE of Scotland’s most distinguished medical authorities, Sir Kenneth Calman, is going to give the Roy Paterson Memorial Lecture as part of the popular Thinking Allowed series at Cairns Church, Milngavie, on Thursday, February 28 at 8pm.
The Chancellor of Glasgow University will speak on the nature of happiness, drawing on poetry and literature as well as experiences of wellbeing and quality of life.
A former chief medical officer for Scotland, and then England, Sir Kenneth is perhaps best known as chairman of the cross-party Commission on Scottish Devolution which recommended extending powers to the Scottish Parliament.
He was professor of oncology at Glasgow University for 10 years before becoming Dean of Postgraduate Medicine and professor of medical education.
He was appointed to the executive board of the World Health Organisation and was its chairman in 1998/99.
Between 1998 And 2007, Sir Kenneth was Vice Chancellor and Warden of Durham University and a member of the Statistics Commission from 1999 until 2007. He is currently president of the Institute of Medial Ethics and Deputy Chair of the Board of the British Library.
He was born and educated in Glasgow, and became chairman of the National Trust in 2010.
His most recent books are ‘A study of storytelling, humour and learning in medicine’ and ‘Medical Education: Past present and future’ and he is currently researching for an M.Litt on Scottish Literature and Medicine.
