Elderly Bearsden woman tragic death in a house fire
THE death of an 84-year-old woman from Bearsden in a house fire has prompted an appeal from firefighters this week to look out for others in the community.
They are also urging people to make sure they have at least one working smoke alarm in their house.
The woman was taken to the Western Infirmary in a serious condition but sadly lost her fight for life.
Assistant Chief Officer Lewis Ramsay, director of community safety at Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, said: “This is a tragic time for the families and our thoughts are with them as they try to come to terms with what has happened.
“Fire can take hold extremely quickly with devastating consequences.
“Every firefighter has the sad knowledge of lives lost and families torn apart by fire – we can never forget danger exists and must continue working together to prevent tragedy.
“It is vital every home is protected by working smoke alarms on every level of the property, so that if a fire does start then those inside have time to get to safety.
“Firefighters simply have no better ally in the fight against fire than communities themselves. Most people look out for someone around them and with their help we can stop fire starting in the first place.
“Our communities need active citizens who take responsibility not only for their own safety but also that of others.”
