Dunbartonshire Concert Band celebrates 40 years of making beautiful music

FORTY years ago, two BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra musicians Geoff Haydock and Glyn Bragg decided there was not enough opportunity for amateur woodwind, brass and percussion players to take part in making music in East Dunbartonshire.

As a result they formed Dunbartonshire County Concert Band, now known as Dunbartonshire Concert Band.

The band now has 60 enthusiastic amateur musicians who rehearse every Saturday morning in Cairns Church, Milngavie and welcomes players of all ages and abilities. It has a busy calendar of events and concerts every year and members are required to commit to weekly rehearsals and concerts.

David Broad, chairman of Dunbartonshire Concert Band, said: “Arthur Main, one of the original members, who joined in its inaugural year in 1973, is still a committed player to this day in the trumpet section.

“He recalls earlier days of the band with fond memories when a young Robert Baxter joined the trumpet section in 1984.

“The very same Robert now proudly conducts the band in his role as musical director after being appointed in 2000.

“He is the longest serving MD to date and also plays with the BBC SSO, RSNO and Scottish Ballet orchestra to name but a few.”

To kick-start the 40th anniversary celebrations the band held an open reunion rehearsal for 80 past and present members on Saturday, February 9 in Cairns Church with former musical directors, Geoff Haydock and Glyn Bragg, at the helm.

Mr Broad added: “Past members travelled from all over the UK to join the celebration and are already looking forward to the next reunion event as they enjoyed themselves so much, reminiscing with friends old and new.

“Undoubtedly the highlight of the year will be the 40th anniversary celebration concert on Saturday, June 29 in the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.”

The band has commissioned renowned Hollywood percussionist turned composer Steve Forman to write a new work for them which will be premiered at the concert along with repertoire from across their 40 year history, there will be something for everyone - classical, big band, film and musicals
