Drivers furious as Milngavie road is closed

MOTORISTS were left fuming after Balmore Road was closed for road works without warning.

Rush-hour traffic was thrown into chaos when the road at Allander Toll was shut on Monday.

Drivers had to negotiate a long diversion which took them through Bishopbriggs.

One driver, who was travelling into Milngavie early on Tuesday morning, heard on the radio that the road would be shut FROM 9.30am, but when he reached it at 7.45 it was already closed.

The disgruntled motorist said: “It’s been a nightmare for drivers as there were no signs giving prior notice of closure. I had to do a major diversion through Bishopbriggs on the Monday evening.

“Local radio on Tuesday morning said the Balmore Road would be closed from 9.30am but I got there at 7.45am and it was already closed.”

A spokesperson for East Dunbartonshire Council said that they were aware of the work being carried out by Glasgow City Council on Balmore Road, and that in order to do the works in a safe manner, they needed to close a section of the road between its junctions with Balmuildy Road and Allander Toll Roundabout from 9.15am until 3.30pm, each day.

The work started on Monday and was expected to take four days.

A diversion route was set up along Balmuildy Road, Hilton Road, the A803 Kirkintilloch Road and onto the A807 Torrance Road and Balmore Road.

A Glasgow City spokesperson said: “In terms of notification, the steps taken were not unusual for a temporary closure with local diversions.

Inconvenience

“The closure was in place between 9.30am and 3.30pm. If road users found this not to be the case, we regret any inconvenience caused and will look into why that has happened.”

The Balmore Road closure compounded traffic misery for commuters in Bearsden and Milngavie, who are already having to deal with Milngavie Road being brought down to one lane in both directions until the end of April as repairs are carried out to gas mains.

Traffic was backed up along Milngavie Road well into Hillfoot on Monday as the unexpected rush-hour Balmore Road closure sent motorists trying to get to Glasgow through Bearsden.
