Demo demands: don’t close our schools!

PEOPLE power took to the streets when around 500 parents and children staged a demonstration against the council’s plans to merge primary schools.

The rally, at East Dunbartonshire Council headquarters in Kirkintilloch on Saturday, attracted supporters of anti-closure campaigns from 11 threatened primaries - including Bearsden, Milngavie and St Joseph’s.

One of the protestors was Scottish stage and screen star Dorothy Paul.

She said: “My grandchild attends Milngavie Primary and another one is due to go there.

“I can travel by train into Milngavie and do a pick-up and then we go into the precinct, which must be one of the nicest in Scotland.

“The school is ideally situated and losing it just seems so senseless.”

Adele Crothall, who has three children at Bearsden Primary, said: “The council’s plans are rushed, lack transparency and are ill thought out. The review appears to be all about cutting budgets and educational standards are an after thought.”

Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “We all knew this would be emotive and do understand the strong feelings but we are trying to find a solution for our primary school estate.”
