Couquhoun Park up for Royal tribute
A BEARSDEN park could get the Royal stamp of approval as part of a national campaign to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the 2012 Olympics.
East Dunbartonshire Council is taking part in a challenge being run by Fields in Trust to designate a total of 2012 open spaces across the UK as Queen Elizabeth ll Fields.
Colquhoun Park in Bearsden, along with High Parks in Lennoxtown, have been chosen to be included in the final list to be designated as a permanent living legacy of the special Royal event.
Councillor Billy Hendry, convener of the development and infrastructure committee, said he is delighted that the council is commemorating the Diamond Jubilee in this way.
He said, “This is a great idea by the Fields in Trust organisation and a very fitting tribute to HM The Queen in her Jubilee Year.
“In East Dunbartonshire we have the King George V Park in Bearsden and five Millennium Fields, including Barloch Moor in Milngavie and Braemar Crescent and Thorn Park in Bearsden, all designated to commemorate important historical events. “The two parks nominated have benefited from significant investment recently thanks not only to the council but to the local communities who clearly value their open spaces.
“They are excellent examples of what East Dunbartonshire has to offer and I hope that we are successful in our bid to have them designated as Queen Elizabeth ll Fields.”
If selected, the parks will not be renamed but will have special plaques erected.
By nominating the parks the council said it is making a commitment to protect them for future generations.
