Could Tesco plans be run off the road?

ACCOUNT was not taken of the 550 new homes to be built at Kilmardinny in the traffic impact report lodged with the Tesco application for a new two-storey superstore

Retired consulting engineer from Milngavie, John Cullen, has studied the transport assessment document accompanying the Tesco application and is questioning why the Kilmardinny and other developments have been omitted in the traffic impact study.

At the former Bearsden Academy site in Morven Road, permission has been granted for 140 houses, 120 at the former St Andrew's College and a further 100 at Milngavie Fire Station, the Marchfield and Douglas Academy.

Because Bearsden Cross is already overloaded with traffic and it is assumed that when the new houses further impact there, drivers will travel via the A81 in Milngavie.

Mr Cullen said: "These trips will impact on the roads being studied in the Tesco transport Assessment and that factor should have been taken into account."

He is scathing of the approach by planners in recommending the granting of permission for both the CALA and the Tesco development and asked:

"What was the point of consulting on a Local Plan and before the ink is dry on it, departing from its terms by these recommendations.

Mr Cullen accepts that Tesco plan to improve the junction at the entrance to the superstore site, but believes that will have little impact as the Strathblane Road and Park Road junctions are already well over capacity before a double sized store is erected.

Milngavie MSP Des McNulty, who has urged the Scottish Government to call-in the Tesco application, also has traffic concerns and said: "While my chief concern is the impact that such a large store could have on the businesses in the precinct and the aesthetics of the village, there are very real worries locally that we could be swamped by the additional traffic that such a large store would be expected to generate."
