Cops probe new homes fire attack

POLICE are investigating arson attacks at a new homes development in Mawell Avenue, Westerton.

The development known as Maxwell Mews consists of three town houses facing Westerton train station which have long been up for sale at offers over 385,000.

A spokesman for Milngavie Police Office said: "The fire department have confirmed this was a case of wilful fire raising with accelerant used in each of the three town houses.

"Two failed to have caused much damage other than smoke before the alarm was raised by neighbours just after midnight on Monday, but the windows were blown out in a third which has structural damage as a result of the fire."

Planning permission was originally granted in April 2005 and the development has been fraught with problems according to neighbours.

Alastair Ewen of Bearsden West community Council told the Herald: "The development has gone far from smoothly and has been a headache for locals since it started.

"During construction excavation into the hillside caused a landslip and huge problems were caused when workmen cut through a field drain on another occasion.

"Just only recently we had to contact the police about windows being left open in the empty properties — that was an invitation for trouble.

"We also had to contact the estate agents marketing the development regarding the eyesore condition of the neglected properties which had fencing falling into the road and were generally unkempt.

"There has been all sorts of speculation about the development and why the homes aren't selling — but all we want to see is them lived in and being maintained in keeping with the surrounding properties."

Four fire appliances attended to bring the blaze under control by around 1am on Tuesday and police are asking anyone with information on the incident to call 532 4000 or Crimestoppers on . Information can be made anonymously.
