The community is mourning the loss of ‘a very dear friend to many’ and Labour political activist - Ali Syed MBE.

Ali passed away on Monday, August 25, aged 79, after a long illness and his funeral was held on Tuesday at Glasgow Central Mosque.

Ali was a trade union activist for many years holding a range of posts in UNISON health branches and in Glasgow Trades Council.

He took up many causes over the years, including the plight of the Palestinian people.

He was a clinical scientist (medical physicist in old terminology) for 35 years and was awarded an MBE by the Queen in 2004 for his community work in Scotland.

A full tribute to the life and work of Ali Syed will be published in next week’s paper (September 4 issue).
