CO-OP OPENS IN BEARSDEN

SHOPPERS now have a new Co-operative food store in Bearsden’s Station Road.

The bright and spacious shop, which cost over half a million pounds to build, was officially opened on Thursday by Provost Eric Gotts and Bearsden Primary School children.

It creates 15 new jobs for the area and will be open from 7am to 7pm every day.

Gayle Honeyman, manager, said: “This new store underlines our commitment to serving local communities and it’s fantastic that the local community played a part in our special opening day.

“We will operate in the heart of the community, providing an ideal location for people to shop locally. It is important to all the members of staff here that we meet people’s needs and we are all looking forward to welcoming our new customers.”

A series of events and promotions are going to be held in the store from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday to celebrate its opening.

The shop sells an extensive range of fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as higher welfare meat and fish. Seasonal products will be introduced throughout the year and the Co-operative bakery will provide a selection of breads and pastries baked fresh in store. As the leading supermarket supporter of Fairtrade foods the store also has a variety of Fairtrade items.

The Co-operative gives profits back to its members through the membership dividend scheme. Members can choose to keep the cash from their dividend payment or donate all or part of their share to local good causes.

Membership of The Co-operative, which costs just £1, offers a range of benefits including a say in how stores are run and the opportunity to support The Co-operative’s campaigns on issues such as climate change and social inclusion.
