Charity event in Milngavie allows everyone to have their cake and eat it
Organisers - Simon Foy, David Mansouri and Robert Whitney
IT was a piece of cake to raise dough for a good cause at the ‘Great Bearsden Bake Off’ at the weekend.
The event at Milngavie and Bearsden Sports Club on Sunday, organised by Bearsden man Simon Foy, proved to be very popular with 53 entries on the day.
Interest in home baking has risen thanks to the success of TV show ‘The Great British Bake Off’ and Simon (40), who enjoys baking with his four-year-old daughter Yasmin, thought it would be a great way to raise cash for Comic Relief.
The business development manager at the sports club, said: “The standard of entries was fantastic and the judges had a hard time choosing the winners but they enjoyed tasting them all.
“So far we’ve raised £430 but I still have a few more cakes to sell so I hope we reach £450.
“A few years ago people who liked baking wouldn’t always admit it, but now it’s become quite cool.
“The number of entries shows just how popular baking has become.”
The overall winner for her yoghurt and white chocolate drizzle cake was Christine Barron from Milngavie and Fiona Joyce from Westerton, Bearsden, won the ‘best tasting cake’ category for her white chocolate and orange sponge.
