Call for 3D models of proposed monster Tesco in Milngavie
PLANNERS should demand Tesco provide a 3D model of their proposed new superstore in Milngavie before the planning application is heard.
That's the view of MP Jo Swinson and campaigners opposed to the development of a new two-tier store linked to a two-storey car park at Gavin's Mill.
Eve Gilmore, who set up the opposition group We Like Milngavie, believes such a model would help inform councillors in making their decision whether to reject or allow the proposal when it comes before the planning board.
She said: "A year ago Tesco had an in-store display which was a PR leaflet and a plan which was largely incomprehensible for busy shoppers.
"In my opinion the plans were at best misleading and they had actual inaccuracies in size relationship to Gavin's Mill.
"Tesco have never produced a model of how their proposed store would actually look.
"I suspect they don't want to do this as we would start to really understand what is being proposed.
"An eight metre high 'shed' dominating Woodburn Way and cutting Milngavie in two is not what anyone who is fond of Milngavie would like for their town centre."
MP Jo Swinson said: "I wrote before Christmas requesting that Tesco provide such a model and have heard nothing.
"Things have moved on dramatically since the in-store stand was put on display more than a year ago and Tesco should now be providing a model demonstrating the scale of the buildings, so the impact on the Gavin's Mill and surrounding conservation area can be assessed.
"I can recommend a very competent East Dunbartonshire firm who could provide such a model if they're having difficulty.
"Undoubtedly if Tesco won't provide a model of their own accord, planners should be making it a requirement of the planning application."
Jo also asked Tesco what plans they have for consultation and what form that consultation might take.
In her letter she stated: "It is of utmost importance to my constituents that there is a full and thorough consultation process between Tesco and the local residents to allay any fears they may have about the possible impact the store would have on the area.
"I would be grateful if you could clarify whether Tesco plans to do any further consultation, and what form that might take."
A Tesco spokesman said: "3D views were created very early on in the design process and have been updated as our plans have developed during consultation and discussion with planning officers. They were included in our consultation brochure available to the public."
