British chess champ Jacob in charity challenge

THE British chess champion Jacob Aagaard played more than 100 games of chess in six hours — and managed to raise £600 for charity.

Jacob, of Milngavie, started his marathon set of games at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and took on anyone willing to pay 5 to play the chess grandmaster.

The mammoth session started at 10.30am on Saturday and finished at 4.30pm. Out of the 101 games Jacob played, he won 82, drew 12 and lost seven.

John Dempsey, organiser of the event and a fellow member of Milngavie Chess Club, said: "He played against 12 players throughout the day, and as one game finished another player would step in, keeping the number of games on the go simultaneously at 12."

Among those who had a go were six local children who pitted their wits against the British Chess Champion.

The money raised will go towards restoring St Siles Church in Glasgow's west end where Jacob is a parishioner.
