Brave Ben helps cancer kids by raising £15,000

DESPITE battling his own illness a Balfron Primary School pupil has raised £15,000 for other children with cancer.

Ben Fraser (14) from Balmaha was diagnosed with leukaemia last July and has since been undergoing treatment at the children’s cancer unit, the Schiehallion, at Glasgow’s Yorkhill Children’s Hospital.

Instead of feeling sorry for himself Ben decided that he wanted to do something to help others who were going through a similar experience to him and asked people to donate money to this great cause.

His mum Lucy (51) said: “He’s been inspired by what he’s seen at the Schiehallion - he thinks they all do a fantastic job.

“After his initial dignosis he talked to a ward sister about the things they need and a cardiac monitor was one of them.

“We’ve now been able to help them buy six as we’ve been inundated with offers of money - the response has been phenomenal.

“Ben has written a thank you note to every single person who has donated.

“Going through the intensive chemotherapy he had a lot of problems at the start and frankly the whole family has been to hell and back.

“We are delighted that Ben’s chemotherapy is working and thankfully it doesn’t look like he is going to need a bone marrow transplant.”

Ben set up a Facebook page and a JustGiving page online to say that he wanted to raise as much money as possible.

His family owns the Oak Tree Inn in Balmaha so many customers donated and his sister Holly held a bake sale at Balfron Primary which raised £1500.

Ben, who is the youngest of eight children, went back to school last week but is still having chemotherapy every Wednesday.

Lucy added: “Knowing that all this good has come out of Ben’s illness does make the whole thing abit easier and I’d personally like to thank everyone who has supported us.”

Donations can still be made online at www.justgiving.com/lucy-fraser0.
