Bearsden: majority say “save school”
CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save Bearsden Primary School from closure were delighted that a clear majority of those who took part in the schools consultation have rejected the proposal.
A total of 66 per cent of more than 2,200 people in Bearsden and Westerton who gave their opinion on plans to close and merge four local primaries in the area have rejected the proposals.
Only 17 per cent agreed with the plans while the remainder said it may be acceptable but they had reservations.
The consultation found that 86 per cent of Bearsden Primary School (BPS) and Castlehill Primary parents found the proposal to close BPS and merge it with Castlehill Primary School at its site 1.2 miles away was unacceptable.
This rises to 95 per cent for BPS parents, with locals hitting out at the idea moving the school from the heart of the community at Bearsden Cross to the edge of the town and outside of the current catchment.
Adele Crothall of the Save Bearsden Primary campaign, said: “We want to thank everyone who made their views known.
“We now hope that the council will respect the overwhelming wishes of the local people who know our community best.
“We are delighted that the wider community has spoken and expressed their fear that these proposals with no obvious educational benefits would also detrimentally affect them in terms of increased traffic congestion, loss of community spirit, loss of a historic landmark and the impact on local shops and businesses at Bearsden Cross.”
