Bearsden lady’s 50th birthday party to raise cash for kids with cancer
A KIND-HEARTED woman who has raised over £15,000 for children with cancer over the past 10 years by holding a charity birthday party each year is going to hold her last one this weekend for her 50th.
Alison Carey, from Bearsden, asks her friends and family to donate cash on her birthday instead of buying her a present and she holds a party in Milngavie’s Ellangowan Social Club with local 70s/80s band Playback Duo.
This year’s event is dedicated to a member of the band, Gary Sloan, from Bearsden, who tragically passed away aged 34 earlier this month after battling cancer for about a year.
Gary, who was married to Simone and had a six-month-old baby Zak, was a much loved popular figure in the area.
Alison said: “He was such a loving guy, really good fun and quite cheeky.
“If you heard laughter he would usually be in the middle of it and he would also do anything to help anyone.
“At my party last year he said he’d see me next year but sadly he didn’t make it.
“About 600 people came to his funeral - he will be very missed by many people.”
All the money raised goes to the Schiehallion ward at Yorkhill Hospital and over the years it’s been used to buy a computer for the teenage room, mood lighting and music for the bathroom, new tables and chairs for the playroom, TVs and DVDs and an assortment of toys.
Alison decided to fundraise for the Schiehallion ward after she visited her niece ten years ago who was there for a stomach scan.
She said: “While we were in the waiting room were two very unwell children next to us.
“They had a drip and they were feeling very sick.
“I was shocked to see how poorly they were and I felt very sorry for them.
“When I asked some of the nurses if there was anything I could do to help they told me they always need new toys and equipment which is sterile to reduce the risk of infection for the cancer patients.
“My 40th birthday was coming up and I decided I’d ask people to donate to this worthwhile cause.
“I can’t believe I’ve had so much support and raised so much money - I’d like to thank everyone for their help.”
Although this is Alison’s last charity birthday party she will continue to raise funds for the Schiehallion ward by holding coffee mornings and other events.
Her 50th party will be on Saturday, March 2 from 7pm until late and tickets cost £5 each, to book phone Alison on 07791149945.
