Bearsden girl wins council calendar competition

A BUDDING artist has beaten more than 4,500 children to win the council’s 2013 Road Safety Calendar Competition.

Laura Turpie (10) from Bearsden fought off stiff competition from 35 other primary schools across the district with her unique idea of drawing a brightly coloured car that looks like it was wearing a clown costume, alongside the slogan ‘Don’t be a fool. Park away from the School!’

She won a £70 gift voucher and a shield that will go on display at her school Killermont Primary in Bearsden. There were a number of other prize winners in different categories, who each received cash, a certificate and a pencil set.

The design from the young artist is part of the Council’s Safer Behaviour Near Roads campaign and will now feature on thousands of calendars that will be distributed across East Dunbartonshire to remind people of this very important road safety message.

Laura, and a number of other pupils whose drawings were chosen as the best in their age range, were presented with their prizes at a special event at the Council’s headquarters at Southbank Marina.

Councillor Alan Moir, convener of the Council’s development and infrastructure committee: said: “This is an extremely popular competition and the standard was very high so judging wasn’t easy. However, there can be only one winner and Laura’s idea of illustrating how foolish it can be to park irresponsibly near schools by giving the car a clown costume, was really clever and she is a very deserving winner.

“I’d like to congratulate Laura and all the others winners this year, they did a great job. The new calendar looks fantastic and I hope that family and friends, as well as everyone else that see it, can enjoy it and remember the important message that Laura has managed to capture in her design.”

Councillor Moir also wish to thank all the teachers who worked with the children on this project.

A total of 4,784 entries from 36 schools across the district entered the competition.
