Bearsden Countdown fan in marathon effort

COUNTDOWN fanatic Innes Carson from Bearsden has helped raise £2,700 after competing in a 25 hour marathon quiz for charity - part of which was broadcast live on Radio 4.
The former winner of what is Channel 4s longest running show recently celebrated the show’s 30th anniversary when he returned for a special champion of champions rematch.
The 21-year-old 4th year Edinburgh University chemistry undergraduate got through the first but was knocked out in the next stage by Kirk Bevins by a very tight score of 112-102.
However, Innes met up with fellow contestant Mark Deeks and they hit on the idea of raising money for charity by doing a 25 hour Countdown marathon, part of which will be shown amongst the highlights of Comic Relief on Friday, March 15.
The former Bearsden Academy student said: “I went down to London and was basically shut in a room for a day.
“I didn’t know anything about a recording until some guys from the BBC came in and the next thing I knew we were on national radio as part of something comedian Mark Watson is doing for Comic Relief.
“Mark (Deeks) did most of the talking, but it was a joint effort and although winning was not the main point of it I think the score was 3128 to me and 3116 to him.”
Countdown is one of the longest running quiz shows in the world, and Innes has watched it since he was four years old.
He added: “I first appeared when I was 17, in June 2009 and won eight times before I was beaten.”
When he was on the first time, Jeff Stelling was the presenter and Rachel Riley the co-host.
Rachel had just taken over from Carol Vorderman who had been with the programme since the beginning.
