A group set up by East Dunbartonshire Council aims to make sure that the new Allander Leisure Centre will suit the needs of local people.

Allander Champions Group was established last year and is made up of representatives from the main user groups within the community and other local representative bodies including Bearsden North Community Council.

They visited Linwood Sports Centre in Renfreshire as part of the process of looking at options for the future and they may visit other centres in the future.

The group was impressed with the modern high quality facilities at the new ON-X (Linwood Sport and Community Centre) which has three swimming pools (a 25 metre 6-lane competition pool, a teaching pool and leisure pool with two flumes and lazy river feature), a sand dressed floodlit pitch,

modern well appointed changing and showering facilities, a cafe, wheelchair access, spin studio and athletic track and field area.

Gordon Cox, chairperson of Bearsden North Community Council, said: “We enjoyed our visit to Linwood Sports Centre - it was very impressive and useful to see ‘one made earlier’.

“It certainly gave us some ideas to consider for a new leisure centre over here although we’ll have different requirements according to the population, age demographic and the amount of funding that will be available.”

Thomas Glen, director of development and regeneration, said: “The group is a sounding board to support the development of a new Allander.

“No specifications or designs have been decided so far and we are working with the Champions Group representatives to decide the specifications over the coming months.”

It’s estimated that it will cost about £19 million to build a new leisure centre and Cala has committed to pay a contribution towards this based upon how much land they get to develop with the council making up the shortfall.
