Lighting up for Christmas cheer

It’s time to get into the festive spirit, with the popular Christmas Lights switch on in Milngavie only a few days away.

The lights will be switched on by the most important of VIPs - Santa Claus - at 5pm this Saturday, November 21, in Milngavie precinct.

He will be accompanied by the winners of the Milngavie BID’s painting and drawing competition which asked youngsters to draw something Christmas themed. They are Sam Smith (8) from Milngavie and Hayley Speedie (6) from Bearsden.

The village will also be filled with 20 stalls selling a variety of art, jewellery and crafts throughout the day.

Milngavie Pipe Band will start the day off at 12pm.

There will also be a magician, Anna and Elsa the Frozen Sisters, a storytelling puppet show, a karate show, local dance schools, rock choir performances, various bands and face painting for children.

Children can also visit Santa in his Grotto, which will be open every Saturday from November 21 until December 12 between 12pm and 4.30pm.

The main event organiser and BID coordinator, Ania Surma, said: “I am very excited to be part of this year’s Christmas festival in Milngavie.

“In cooperation with my colleagues from Milngavie BID we have had a very strong engagement from the church groups and local community in order to make this year’s event very family friendly with something for everyone.

“Memorial Square is where all the wonderful acts will perform throughout the day and we think we have catered for virtually everyone this year. And the best part is that it’s all free.”

Following the switch on there will be a performance by upcoming Glasgow band, ‘We Were Hunted’. Formed in September 2013, they’ve had singles played on Radio 1, XFM and the band reached the final 5 of the UK Relentless music competition. ‘The Favour’ will also perform.
