THE final preparations are being made for a charity walk, which has been organised by Alzheimer Scotland, at Mugdock Country Park on Sunday (September 16).
The Memory Walk, which is the charity’s flagship event, already has over 180 people signed up to the challenge and Capital FM Breakfast presenter and comedian Des Clarke is supporting the event.
He said: “It’s inspiring to see so many people of all ages who are going to join in this Memory Walk to raise money for such a worthwhile charity.
“I’d encourage people to sign up for the challenge. Many participants are walking in memory of someone they’ve been close to who has had, or who has, dementia so it is a day for them to feel very proud of themselves for making a difference. “I’d like to wish everyone the best of luck and I hope they really enjoy the day.”
Alzheimer Scotland, one of Scotland’s leading dementia charities, is running the family fundraising day in partnership with Bupa Care Homes as part of its celebration of World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21 and hopes to raise over £15,000 from the event.
Gillian Messelink, corporate fundraiser, said: “There are currently 84,000 people in Scotland who have dementia, and this number is likely to double within the next 25 years. Alzheimer Scotland is working to make sure no one goes through dementia on their own and money raised by the Memory Walk will fund projects such as dementia advisors, nurses, the Alzheimer Scotland Dementia Research Centre and the freephone dementia helpline.”
Entertainment on the day will include personal appearances from guests representing two of Alzheimer Scotland’s corporate fundraising partners, the Beano’s Dennis the Menace will be there on behalf of DC Thomson, and Grimple from The Green Insurance Company will join in with activities as well. There will also be music, dance, face painting, a magician, arts and crafts for all ages and delicious home baking.
