A MILNGAVIE man and his pal are going to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise money for St Margaret’s Hospice in Clydebank.

John Kelly (61), from Hunter Road, and Kevin Duffy (52), from Old Kilpatrick, have been friends since they met in 1979 when they both joined Strathclyde Police on the same day.

Both retired now, cycling is one of the activities which has cemented their friendship over the years.

John said: “Some months ago when Kevin was anticipating retiral we began to look forward to more frequent opportunities to get on our bikes. We decided to do a decent cycling challenge and Kevin initially suggested we cycled across America but I slapped down that suggestion. Then we decided on a trip from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

“I’ve been told that the wind will be behind us if we do it that way but I’m not so sure - maybe we should get sails put on our bikes to see if that’s true.

“We immediately thought of St Margaret’s Hospice as it is local to both of us and the good work which is carried out there is legendary. We’d urge friends and colleagues to donate what they can to help the work of the dedicated, compassionate people who work at St Margaret’s Hospice.”

John and Kevin had planned to complete this challenge with their friend Neil McCover but he tragically died last October in a cycling accident.

John said: “We miss his sense of humour and his enthusiasm, not to mention the rather impressive “Mr Grumpy” act which he took pleasure in producing when the rest of us would delay the start of a cycle ride by asking him to check out bits and pieces on our bikes. We will remember Neil with great fondness during our journey. We know he would have enjoyed it. We would have enjoyed having him with us.”

The pair leave on May 31 to complete the 1,000-mile trip and they plan to keep their sponsors up to date as far as possible with their progress. They are pretty sure that at least one interesting event will occur in the journey.
