Hi-tech first as school app is launched

PARENTS of pupils in Milngavie and Bearsden can now be kept up to date with the latest news and events from their child’s school following the launch of a new app for iPhones and smart phones.

East Dunbartonshire Council is the first local authority to have its own bespoke branded application – EDC Schools – which is free to download from the iPhone app store and android market place.

Working in conjunction with design specialists e4education, who created the app, the council’s ICT service designed and implemented the project with schools across the authority.

Revolutionise

The app sends information from a school’s website, as soon as it is updated, directly to phones which have the app downloaded.

John Roach, managing director of e4education said: “The app has the potential to revolutionise how schools deliver news and events and will synchronise these directly from a school’s website to any iPhone or smart phone.

“As well as being incredibly useful during emergencies and adverse weather, the app has much more potential to be used as an effective communication tool.”

Convener of education, Councillor Una Walker, said: “Over recent years we have worked extremely hard to improve our schools’ websites and they are now seen as an invaluable communication channel between schools and parents.

“We are now taking this a step further and are delighted to be the first council to launch a branded version of this app, ensuring parents received news as it’s happening.

“I would like to congratulate our ICT service for their hard work on this project which is already proving popular, with more than 700 people downloading the app and we are sure many more people will follow suit.”

Selecting the school you wish to view is made easy by either using your current location or entering the school’s postcode. Parents can also add multiple schools if they have children who attend different schools. In addition the application also provides parents with the means to contact schools directly via their phones or e-mail.
