Westerton will be buzzing this Saturday when the annual Gala Day takes place - and this year it has a sporty Commonwealth Games theme.

A BIG Lottery 2014 communities grant has helped to provide taster sports sessions with A-Star sports, including netball, tennis, rugby and basketball and mini competitions.

There will also be a one-mile fun run for all ages and abilities, organised in partnership with Maryhill Harriers, with goodie bags and medals for all participants. Meet at the open space on Wheatfield Road from 11am to register. Run starts at 11.30am, and will finish in time for the Gala Queen’s parade.

This year’s Gala Queen is Emma McDougall, her escort is Connor Craig, the flower girls are Skye Dick, Grace Donaldson, Eve Nowek, Sunny Fletcher, Gauri Prabhaker and Caitlin Murphy.

The parade will set off from Wheatfield Road at midday. Everyone is invited to wear Commonwealth country colours or take Commonwealth flags to bring lots of different countries to Westerton. It will arrive at Westerton playing fields approx 12.30pm for the crowning ceremony.

With The Great British Bake Off back on TV, they’ve also got a Great Gala Bake Off. Entries are invited for four categories - classic sponge, cupcakes, tray bake and bread product. Hand them in to Westerton Bowling Club by 11.30am on Saturday.

The brownie hut will be transformed into a tearoom with home-baking and the bowling club will be open from 12.30pm for kids crafts and refreshments. Go to
