A VARIETY of events were held last week to thank Rev John Harris for his 25 years of ministry at Bearsden Cross Church.

The schools where Mr Harris was chaplain - Bearsden Primary, Colquhoun Park Primary, The High School of Glasgow Junior School and Bearsden Academy - each marked their final assembly with him in a special way.

Mrs Elspeth Talbot, session clerk of Bearsden Cross Church, spoke warmly of his ministry at a meeting of Dumbarton Presbytery last Tuesday and the congregation bid farewell to their much loved and respected minister last Friday.

An afternoon tea was followed by a presentation in the evening to Mr Harris and his wife, Ellen. Mr Harris replied and his son, Andy gave a very amusing speech about the ‘man behind the cassock’.

Musical entertainment afterwards included skilfully adapted words to the Abba song “Thank you for the music” before everyone moved through to the hall for food and fellowship.

Finally, there was a very large turnout to his final service at the church on Sunday where the Sacrament of Holy Communion was celebrated.

During the past 45 years as a minister Rev Harris served in churches in Haddington, Irvine and Motherwell before being inducted to the charge of the former Bearsden South Church in January 1987. He became the minister of Bearsden Cross Church - a union of the former North and South churches - in November 2006.
