Council makes equality pledge

East Dunbartonshire Council has signed up to an action plan strengthen its commitment to equality issues following specific duties recently added to the Equality Act 2010.

The new regulations came into effect on May 27 2012, and were introduced by the Scottish Parliament to support existing legislation.

New specific duties focus on encouraging public authorities to concentrate their equalities on making a difference to their communities.

Council Leader Rhondda Geekie said: “The Council is committed to protecting members of our community from discrimination. The introduction of the specific duties will better focus our concentration on equalities and enable us to make a real difference to those furthest from the mainstream in East Dunbartonshire.”
