The bomb squad was called out to a house in Balfron when the owner mistook a piece of metal for an explosive while digging in the garden.

A gardener contacted police at 5.20pm on Wednesday after unearthing an item which he feared could be a mortar.

Experts from the Royal Logistics Corps Explosive Ordnance Disposal regiment were sent to the property on Buchanan Street.

However, upon inspection the object was identified as a section of industrial cable with a piece of metal attached to it.

No evacuation took place and the public suffered only minimal inconvenience.
