A BUDDING Bearsden snowboarding has been voted the top UK sports personality of the year by a major supermarket chain who sponsor him.
Matt McCormick (15) has been part of Asda’s sporting programme since January and received £500 to help him with travel costs and clothing.
Following almost a year on the programme he was selected by bosses as the only Scottish winner and awarded a further £300 to be crowned Asda Athlete for Scotland 2012.
The Bearsden lad picked up his accolade on Saturday from William Smith, Community Life Champion at the Bearsden branch of the supermarket which was also attended by East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson.
The Bearsden Academy pupil said: “I was quite surprised to get this and had no idea I was in the running for this. I have been going to the store throughout the year as part of the Asda Athletics Programme. They provided me with some support and let me go in and raise money from bag packing and tombolas.”
The highlight of the year on the competitive circuit was Matt’s first place in The British Championships in Laxx, Switzerland. He had only expected to come in the top 10, but won the 12-15 age category and was third snowboarder overall in the whole competition.
Mr Smith said: “He is a super lad and a real grafter. We gave him £500 at the beginning of the year and when we came to chose a Scottish winner looked at the ongoing input all those on the progamme had done. Matt was the clear winner. He has done everything asked of him, which included helped out with bag packing, a tombola and keeping a blog of his activities.”
The members of Bearsden Ski club, who trained this year with the British snowboarding Squad in Austria will be back out there next February for another training camp.
ON A ROLL . . . Matt with MP Jo Swinson and Asda Bearsden’s William Smith.
