Were you one of the lucky few selected to carry the Queen’s Commonweath Games Baton through East Dunbartonshire a year ago?
If so there’s an invitation for an exclusive event with your name on it.
A special celebration is being held to honour the 104 local hero batonbearers next month – exactly a year since the Commonwealth Games ended.
The celebration will include the unveiling of a roll of honour and commemorative book, a presentation to each batonbearer, highlights from the baton’s journey on July 19, refreshments and more.
The event takes place on August 3 from 2pm in East Dunbartonshire Council’s Marina headquarters in Kirkintilloch.
Organisers are currently trying to contact everyone who helped to carry the Baton in East Dunbartonshire last summer, and are asking for the public’s help to trace anyone not reached by the council.
In order to be included in the special celebration, batonbearers are being asked to get in touch before July 13.
Council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “It is hard to believe that it was almost a year ago that the eyes of the Commonwealth were fixed on East Dunbartonshire as the Queen’s Baton journeyed through our communities.
“It was a momentous occasion and I am proud to say that genuine local heroes were at the heart of the QBR celebration.
“We felt it was appropriate to mark the contribution made by batonbearers last year, to reflect on the success of the activities surrounding the Games and also to look to the future and the ongoing legacy.
“The first anniversary of the Games is the ideal time to remember the role played by the batonbearers and I look forward to welcoming our guests on 3 August. I would also like to pay tribute to the hundreds of local people who volunteered as Clydesiders and helped to make the Games such a sparkling success. They should take great pride in their contribution.”
A copy of the commemorative QBR book will also be sent to of East Dunbartonshire’s ‘2nd teams’ – Jamaica, Norfolk Island and Namibia.
Scott Hill, chairman of East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture Trust, added: “I am delighted we will be honouring the batonbearers in this way. The journey of the Baton through East Dunbartonshire was a great occasion last July and helped to shine a light on the excellent facilities and services provided by both the trust and council.”
If you were a batonbearer e-mail email@example.com or call 0141 578 8625 before July 13.
