GOBSMACKED - that’s what Taylor Ferguson, Milngavie’s own stylist to the stars, was at the recent prestigious awards ceremony when he was recognised for his half a century in the hairdressing profession.
He scooped the Lifetime Achievement Award in the inaugural Scottish Health and Beauty Awards 2011 held in Glasgow’s SECC.
The awards, sponsored by the 5pm.co.uk website, attracted no less than 35,000 online votes and were set up to recognise the best and most creative in the Scottish hairdressing world.
For an amazing 50 years, Taylor Ferguson has been working in the profession, having followed in the footsteps of his hairdresser mother Patricia in to the family business which was based in Coatbridge.
It was 35 years ago that Taylor and his wife Anne - who have lived in Milngavie for the past 33 years - set up their own salon in Glasgow’s Bath Street where they’ve established an enviable reputation in the business.
Taylor’s work has taken him all over the world, participating in prestigious hair shows in London, New York, Hong Kong, Paris, Bangkok and Amsterdam.
He told the Herald: “The award was a complete surprise - I sat in the audience watching all the other awards being announced and it didn’t cross my mind that I was being recognised with one too. I was 100 per cent gobsmacked.
“My wife Anne and a number of the team had come along too so it was fabulous to be able to share with them a very special moment.
“I’ve been fortunate to be able to enjoy my career and meet thousands of fantastic people in the process. There’s never a day passes that I don’t enjoy picking up my scissors and getting to work.
“My mum cut her friends hair until she was in her late 80s so I want to continue working hard and transforming clients with good hair makeovers.”
Taylor, who has just turned 65, is no stranger to the world of awards.
He’s a past winner of the Northern Hairdresser of the Year title and was a finalist in both the British Hairdresser of the Year and Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year Awards.
He was given the accolade of Hairdresser of Distinction by the National Hairdressers Federation and won a Great Scot Award for Business.
And he’s been on the judging panel of the British Hairdressing Awards on several occasions.
Taylor and the team have worked tirelessly for charities including Leukaemia Research, participating in a series of London-based charity fundraising events called the Alternative Hair Show
He also worked on charity hair shows for the British Heart Foundation and is a great supporter of the Great Ormond Street Hospital Appeal. He regularly donates makeover prizes to Scottish charities.
The phrase Hair by Taylor Ferguson has appeared in countless newspapers and glossy magazines and his expert opinion is regularly sought after for TV and radio.
As well as a loyal client base, his salon has welcomed a number of high profile celebrities including Penny Lancaster, Rachel Hunter, Billy Connolly, Jenni Falconer, Jenny Powell, Darius, Lulu, Michelle Collins, Michelle McManus and TV design duo Colin and Justin.
Away from his work, Taylor loves spending time in his Milngavie garden and with his toddler grandson Taylor Junior.
