East Dunbartonshire MP Jo Swinson is urging local people to make sure they are registered to vote for next year’s general election.
Following the massive local turnout of 91% - the highest in the whole of Scotland – at the recent independence referendum, Jo wants local people to take just three minutes to register to vote and make sure they continue to engage with the democratic process.
The process to register is quick and simple and can be done by visiting: gov.uk/register-to-vote. All that’s required to register is your name, address, date of birth and National Insurance number.
Jo said: “The ability to vote in free and fair elections is one of the most treasured freedoms we have, and I was delighted that so many local people cast their vote in the independence referendum.
“The new system of Individual Electoral Registration couldn’t be simpler and is fit for the modern age. It will mean that individuals take responsibility for registration and the system is less open to fraud.
“Last month the Government announced over a million people had already used the new online system, and we all heard stories of people queuing up to register for the independence referendum. Please take a few minutes today to ensure you are registered to vote.”
