A Lenzie man has emerged as one of just 11 UK winners of an EY Entepreneur of the Year 2015 UK award, for his innovative approach to windows.

Andy Kerr is managing director of CMS Window Systems, whose main base is in Castlecary, near Cumbernauld, after a tough contest in which he was assessed against six different criteria.

These included entrepreneurial spirit, strategic direction, personal integrity and influence, and national and global impact.

Only the top 11 busines leaders that best demonstrated these features were named winners, with each receiving the accolade EY Entrepreneur of the Year 2015 UK winner.

Established in 2006, CMS Windows supplies windows, door and curtain walling fabricators and installers in what’s claimed to be the most energy efficient and sustainable homes, schools, hospitals, offices and public buildings.

He says he has built the firm on a sustainability ethos, which extends into every aspect of the business.

This includes a commitment to apprenticeships and youth employment, which is argued to go much further than that of most manufacturing businesses.

It covers everything from design through manufacture, installation and aftercare, and works on major housing investment programmes and commercial building projects UK-wide.

Besides developing the firm as a specialist in energy-efficient solutions Mr Kerr has also made local employment and fair pay a priority.

Earlier this year CMS became the 150th Scottish company to sign up to “the Living Wage”.

Mr Kerr said: ““Signing up to the Living Wage benefits us as a business in so many ways. “Most importantly, the Living Wage is particularly helpful to our young workers whose role in our long-term business success cannot be understated.

“As our strong growth continues through new commercial, social housing and housebuilding contracts across Scotland, we must continue to invest in today’s young workers who will be the ones taking us forward in five, ten or twenty years from now.”

Last year CMS won the Excellence in Young People Development award at the 2014 Lanarkshire Business Excellence Awards.
