A council employee has been recognised for his outstanding performance at work at a UK awards ceremony in Leeds.

Despite having only completed the first year of his four year apprenticeship, Allan Campbell, from Bishopbriggs, was named runner up in the APSE Housing and Building Maintenance Apprentice of the Year Awards 2015.

During the impressive first year of his apprenticeship Allan has carried out a variety of duties in relation to his trade.

As part of his training he attends the West College of Scotland where he is working towards his SVQ Level 3 electrical installation qualification.

He is said to be performing well in class and to have an extremely positive attitude towards his studies.

East Dunbartonshire Council leader Rhondda Geekie congratulated Allan on his success.

She said: “Allan was up against apprentices from all over the United Kingdom, many of whom were nearing the end of their apprenticeships, so to have received this award is a fantastic achievement.

“He has got off to a really great start to his career and we are all extremely proud of him.

“His supervisers, lecturers and colleagues are very impressed with his confidence and maturity and his ability to interpret instruction and regulations to a standard surpassing his years.

“With his drive and determination, coupled with his obvious talent, it looks as though Allan has a very promising career ahead of him.”

Allan said: “Having helped out a family friend with some electrical work when I was still at school, I knew I wanted to work in the building industry and felt it would be the best career for me.

“Having gained excellent grades at school my mum felt strongly that I should go to university, but I knew that this was not for me.”

He added: “The opportunity to train whilst getting paid appealed to me and I successfully applied for an electrician apprenticeship with East Dunbartonshire Council.

“I remain really motivated by my career and want to continue building my knowledge and skills. I know I have made the right choice.”
