Talented young people from every local secondary have been given special awards for their achievements outside school.

The pupils were from all eight East Dunbartonshore secondaries – including Boclair, Bearsden Academy and Douglas Academy – as well as Campsie View School and Merkland School.

The annual Celebration of Achievements Awards Ceremony, staged this year at Boclair, is organised by the council’s education service to recognise pupils’ successes and achievements outwith school.

Their achievements spanned more than 20 sports including rowing, skiing, netball, karate, table tennis and football, dance and outdoor activities.

These also included pursuits such as climbing, orienteering, debating, cooking, singing and acting.

Education committee convener, Councillor Eric Gotts said: “We must always find ways of shining a light on the positive way that our young people conduct themselves and celebrate their achievements at every opportunity.

“We’ve got prize-winning golfers, windsurfers, swimmers, athletes and kickboxers not to mention our top cooks, dancers, poets, artists and musicians.

“Add to that the big-hearted pupils recognised for their work for charity and in the voluntary sector and it is clear that there is much to be proud of in East Dunbartonshire today.”

He added: “I’d like to add my personal congratulations to each and every one of the pupils who attended the event – and encourage them to continue to attack life with the energy that they seem to have in spades.”
