Milngavie Choir wow Cairns Church
milngavie choir concert
CAIRNS Church provided a new venue for Milngavie Choir’s Christmas Concert, held on Saturday, December 8 under the baton of Music Director Razvan Luculescu.
An appreciative audience were treated to a festive programme of traditional and modern Christmas music.
The concert opened with a delicate performance of Gounod’s Ave Maria, with a delightful solo from young soprano Sophie Brierton. The unfamiliar acoustic was a challenge to the choir, but they soon found their equilibrium.
This was followed by Rutter’s Christmas Lullaby which was performed with pleasing harmonic blend. Next on the programme was Balulalow, an exciting new piece by local musician Adrian Finnerty. The choir coped well with the intricate harmonies of the music, and did justice to this attractive work.
Two spirited carols followed: Good King Wenceslas and Go Tell in on the Mountain, which were most ably accompanied by the choir’s resident accompanist Flora Tzanetaki.
The choir had a chance to rest their voices while Graeme Stokes played a medley of seasonal tunes and songs on the organ.
There followed three lively carols: Deck the Halls, Shepherd’s Pipe Carol and Ding, Dong Merrily, followed by the gentle O Little Town of Bethlehem.
In the Bleak Midwinter employed two soloists from among the choir members, whose gentle voices added to the soft unaccompanied singing of the group. A slight drop in intonation was quickly remedied.
Three congregational carols were included, with another young soloist, Ian Gibson, providing bright trumpet descant to O Come All Ye Faithful.
The concert concluded with Joy to the World, using organ piano and trumpet augmentation to provide a rousing finish.
