A LITTLE car with a lot of room is possibly the best way to describe models such as Hyundai’s ix20.

This is a small MPV that has a lot of big things going for it.

It has a smart if not the most stylish appearance and offers owners lots of versatility in its spacious interior.

You also get value for your money, thanks to the high level of standard features in this model.

Prices start at just £11,995 for the Classic 1.4-litre petrol car while the test model, Active trim 1.4-litre diesel, isn’t over priced at £14,445.

Some of the features in the well-equipped entry model are height-adjustable driver’s seat, ESP, air conditioning, radio/CD with six speakers plus input socket for MP3, RDS USB and iPod.

The most popular choice here will be the Active range which also gets 16-inch alloy wheels, body-coloured door handles and mirrors – electrically adjustable and heated – reversing sensors, Bluetooth connectivity, electric rear windows and audio controls on the leather-trimmed steering wheel.

Add an extra £1,000 and you’ll get the range-topping Style which comes with a dual-panel panoramic glass sunroof and front fog lights.

The ix20 has lots of interior space, including many little storage areas, and it really feels like a much bigger can when driving.

Despite its tall body handling was good when cornering and ride comfort was also excellent for driver and passengers.

The 89bhp diesel engine can be a bit noisy at times but I thought it supplied punchy enough acceleration going up through the six-speed manual gearbox.

All manual models come with stop-start technology and this helps the model tested achieve frugal fuel economy figures of 66.7mpg combined, 67.3mpg extra urban and 60.1mpg urban.

The ix20 is nimble enough and well suited to town driving or out on the motorway where it cruises without too much engine or wind noise.

It is also ideal if you have a lot of luggage with the boot’s 440 litres capacity rising to 1,486 litres with the seats folded.

This supermini-small MPV model is quite a package and don’t forget it also comes with Hyundai’s Five Year Triple Care package - five-year unlimited-mileage warranty, road assistance and free vehicle health checks.
