Scottish double for martial arts ace David

A HIGH-KICKING martial arts expert has claimed double gold in his first Scottish title event of the year.

David Monaghan, from Roman Drive in Bearsden, won the medals for sparring and patterns — a series of movements against an imaginary opponent — at the Scottish Championships organised by the Imperial Taekwondo Association.

In the sparring final at Dalkieth School Campus, David produced an impressive performance to beat the hosts club's world champion to boost his confidence in the run-up to the European Championships, which start in Croatia on Sunday.

David's dad John, the head instructor at Bearsden Ultimate Taekwondo, said: "He has been working hard and is hoping for some good results in Croatia.

"Winning the two medals was a great way to start the year and fingers crossed he will do better than last season."

In last year's Black Belt League, David picked up two gold medals for sparring and patterns and a silver for his flying high kick.

The assistant junior instructor at the Bearsden club also won the best overall junior champion award for 2008 and was presented with his trophies in the Mariner Centre in Falkirk.

The league consisted of three tournaments held in different venues throughout the year, with the accumulated points going towards the final scores.

See Milngavie and Bearsden Herald for further details of Bearsden Ultimate Taekwondo classes.
