Mugdock set to rock in Erne's memory

A FESTIVAL of music is set to rock Mugdock Country Park from June 21-26. Diverse selections of music will be staged which will appeal to many tastes from classical through folk, blues, jazz, rock 'n roll to Celtic.

Mugdock's music festivals were founded by the late Erne Parkin, who was musical director, and park manager Iain Arnott has made sure that this year's event will benefit Erne's favourite charity, the Suzy Fund — a project which feeds starving orphans in Africa.

An award has been established in Erne's memory and musicians can compete for it at an open mic contest on Saturday 26.

Solo and group performers will have the chance to compete to win cash prizes for best entrants and given free recording studio time at The Audio Lounge and have the opportunity to make a cameo appearance at the Celtic concert in the evening.

The Parkin family is also putting up a form of trophy in memory of Erne and wife Dorothy explained: "I am absolutely delighted that Iain and Mugdock have decided to hold a music festival this year and continue what was proving to be a very popular event in the yearly calendar.

"It is, of course, a very different format from before but Iain and his team have put together an exciting programme covering all genres of music — certainly something to satisfy all musical tastes.

"Erne, as we know, loved to encourage new talent and so it is very fitting that we have dedicated the open mic competition in his name and we hope all budding singer/songwriters will come forward to compete for this exciting new trophy.

"If all goes well and we are able to secure some funding or sponsorship for next year it would be nice to extend the week to include music again in the bandstand which would enable us to re-introduce international and local talent and make it accessible to all — very much in keeping with Erne's original ethos."
