Book and Arts Festival latest
THE third Milngavie Book and Arts Festival takes place next week and promises to be the most creative and exciting yet.
The Festival will be opened on Thursday, September 9 at 1.30 pm in the town centre by Milngavie's own star of ITV's 60 Minute Makeover, John Amabile.
Also featuring during the Festival's five-day run are BBC Scotland's sports presenter, Rob McLean, who will host a special sports quiz, and Viv Lumsden and Alan Douglas, all of whom live locally.
Writers appearing to discuss their work include BBC journalist Fergal Keane, broadcaster Lesley Riddoch, Jackie Kay and Alan Taylor.
Scottish style writer and broadcaster Lynne McCrossan will launch her first book "A Girl's Guide to Vintage" on Thursday, when there will also be a swish clothes swap event. Bring along a fashion or vintage item you no longer need and swap it for someone else's unwanted treasure.
Milngavie is the latest location featured in the Spy Trail series of books. Solve the clues to see the sights in Milngavie and be in with a chance to win a prize. For further details of the Milngavie Spy Trail, go to www.treasuretrails.co.uk.
There's plenty for children too with Julia Donaldson, author of the hugely successful Gruffalo series, performing her songs and stories.
Other book events include Tinderbox Heroes, the story of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue service, Mma Ramotswe's Cookbook, recipes based on Alexander McCall Smith's famous series, discovering Scotland's Lost Local Lines, the fascinating story of Scotland's forgotten railways, Rosie Wallace's first novel — A Small Town Affair about Scottish small town life (definitely not Milngavie!) and Alistair Moffat's launch of the Faded Map — the Lost Kingdoms of Scotland.
The book events culminate in the Fish and Chips and Champagne Crime Night, hosted by Len Murray, and featuring crime writers, G.J. Moffat, Shirley McKay and Caro Ramsay.
On the Art side, Katharina Kubrick, artist daughter of film-maker Stanley Kubrick, will be showing her new line in handmade gold and silver jewellery as well as displaying her paintings and prints. Other artists, local and international, will exhibit and demonstrate their work in the Arts Marquee, for the duration of the festival.
There will also be a daily crafts fair, drama and music events and guided walks to Mugdock Castle and to Glengoyne Distillery.
