Emma gets Edinburgh Fringe spot

YOUNG Bearsden actress Emma Gallacher is winging her way to Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival next month for an original student-led production.

Emma (18) of Endrick Drive, plays a mother magpie with a mean streak in ‘Howling Moon’, a dark comedy, full of heart, set in a fairytale forest.

The show has been created by herself and fellow university undergraduates as part of student theatre company Flyaway Theatre.

The show centres around teenager Maggie who falls asleep in bed but wakes up in a wood full of weeping trees.

Her only hope of escape is a charismatic joker known as the Fox.

But other forest creatures, including a family of miserly magpies, have other ideas.

Emma has just completed her first year at the University of York, studying for a BA (Hons) in Writing, Directing and Performing.

She is also a member of the university’s drama society.

Tickets for the performance, which runs from August 3-29 cost £8.50 (£7.50 concessions) and can be booked on www.edfringe.com/whats-on/theatre/howling-moon

In a recent review, award-winning student newspaper YorkVision described the show as “magical - brilliantly funny and heart-wrenchingly sad.”

The show is the latest venture for former Glasgow Academy pupil, Emma. Last year, she landed the part of Gypsy girl Esmeralda in the Scottish Youth Theatre’s production ‘The Court of Miracles’ at the Tron Theatre, based on the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

She has also performed on TV, with a guest part on BBC1 children’s comedy drama Half-Moon Investigations in 2009, and featured in a recent Irn-Bru advert.
