A MILNGAVIE author is thrilled to have been nominated for the People’s Book Prize for new authors.
Bert Mitchell (45) was amazed to hear that his second crime/thriller novel ‘The Hurting: The Glasgow Terror’ was up for this prestigious award.
His book about the threat of terrorism was selected from over 200 and he is one of only 12 finalists who have been chosen to go to the gala final on May 29 in The Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspapers Makers near St Paul’s Cathedral in London.
But now he needs people to go online www.peoplesbookprize.com to vote for it so that he has a chance of winning - voting closes on May 20.
He said: “I’m really pleased to get so far as this is backed by the publishing association.
“The books are read by judges and either accepted or not.
“To make it into the final 12 with my book is massive - it proves the quality of it.
“Terrorism is still very relevant - three men were arrested in Birmingham recently for plotting to commit acts of terror.
“Being part of this will take my book to a UK-wide audience.”
Last December Bert was ‘chuffed to bits’ when hundreds of copies of his latest book sold out within an hour at a signing.
He was stunned to find fans queuing at Waterstone’s in Stirling and the store run out of copies quickly.
Supplies also ran out within an hour when he was at Waterstone’s in Glasgow the next day.
His debut novel ‘Parallel Lines: The Glasgow Supremacy’ was released in 2011 under his psuedonym RJ Mitchell.
He got the idea for his next story ‘The Hurting: The Glasgow Terror’ after the London bombings – a time when it was felt all cities in Britain were vulnerable to terror attacks.
It takes many elements from Parallel Lines and puts them in a bigger arena to create an action-packed thriller.
Anyone who is familiar with Glasgow will recognise many of the locations, which includes a network of underground tunnels in the West End – the unused remains of the old Victorian railway under the Botanic Gardens.
He’s nearly finished the manuscript for his third novel which he expects to be published early autumn this year under the title ‘The Largest Shadow.’
