Tom Harrold (16) was joint winner in the BBC Proms/Guardian Young Composer of the Year after a panel of judges gave his 4½ minute ensemble, Dance for percussion sextet and piano, top marks.

Tom travelled to London last week to hear his piece performed by the city-based ensemble 'Endymion' as part of this year's BBC Proms series at London's Cadogan Hall.

The composition was also recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3 which will go out today (Friday) at 8.30pm.
Along with this, Tom will also be commissioned for a new work to be performed by the BBC in the 2008 Proms.

Tom, from Bearsden, said: "It was great to hear my piece performed by such a talented group of people. It came as a surprise because I'd written it a while ago and forgot it had been submitted."

Out of all of the winners and highly commended entries in each of the categories, Tom was the only Scottish entrant to receive a prize.
He has just started as a fifth year at Douglas Academy's music school,

Milngavie, where he studies piano and composition, and hopes to go on and study music in London.
