Wayfarer’s pub in Croftamie is a real life saver

VISITORS and residents in Croftamie near Drymen have extra peace of mind now thanks to a new defibrillator outside the Wayfarer’s pub in the village.
Villagers and local businesses raised the £1800 to buy the life-saving equipment and a weatherproof cabinet which has now been attached to the pub with kind permission from the owner, Stuart Burch.
The project to provide the defibrillator, which can be used by anyone when someone has a heart attack, was assisted by Trossachs Search and Rescue Team who provide the First Responder service in the area for the Scottish Ambulance Service. A local electrician, who prefers to remain nameless, fitted the cabinet, which is lit and alarmed, to the building for free.
Sion Barrington of Trossachs Search and Rescue Team, said: “When CPR is carried out the chances of survival are around 5 per cent but when CPR and a defibrillator are used quickly survival rates can jump to over 50 per cent. No training is necessary as the device tells you simply and clearly how to use it.”
Stuart Burch said: “The project was launched by regulars in the pub who had heard all about defibrillators from one of our local first responders, Sion. I was delighted to host fundraising efforts by the community and was astounded by some of the excellent donations given by other local businesses and businessmen. The local ambulance station personnel are excellent but this device could give a casualty the lifesaving ‘shock’ they require in the few minutes before the first responders from Trossachs SAR or the Scottish Ambulance Service arrive.”
Trossachs Search and Rescue Team also operates the local Heartstart Scheme, part of the Heartstart UK initiative administered by the British Heart Foundation and runs classes in the village to teach CPR and how to use the defibrillator.
Stuart Ballantyne, secretary of the team, said: “We offer free Heartstart training in line with a national syllabus and teach people how to carry out CPR and use an automatic external defibrillator, like the one installed here. We have taught over 1,100 people in the past few years.”
