Village children get the book bug
BOOK lovers in the villages enjoyed taking part in Stirling libraries ‘Off the Page’ book festival recently.
The packed programme which had events in Drymen, Strathblane and Balfron libraries was well received by all the audiences, with very positive feedback from everyone.
Little ones enjoyed Bookbug workshops with songs, stories, games and rhymes. The Playbus was out and about in Killearn, offering story times, crafts and dressing up for local nursery children.
Crime writer Caro Ramsay entertained the audience at Strathblane Library with stories of how her books evolved. Then during a lively question and answer session she explained how her day job helped her to research her books.
As an osteopath, her patients come from all professions and she often asks them questions to gain information, while she is treating them.
The prizegiving for the Off the Stanza poetry competition was held in the Tolbooth Attic, Stirling.
The highlight of the evening was the unexpected, but very welcome, appearance by Scottish Makar Liz Lochhead who, as well as presenting the prize to winner Anne Clarke, also read several of her poems.
An Evening of Gaelic, merging music and storytelling by national and local talent was held on Wednesday evening. The event had been sponsored by Bord na Gaidhlig and was very well received by the enthusiastic audience.
Love your Library Day on the Thursday was even more successful than last year’s and is now firmly established in the Off the Page calendar. Library staff organised a wide range of activities, provided tea, coffee, juice and home baking to the library visitors and all pronounced it a great success.
Sponsorship was received again from Creative Scotland for the week long festival.
