Strathblane allotments: full plans are unveiled
THE Blane Valley Allotment group presented full details of its community allotment project at a public meeting in Strathblane Village Club last Saturday.
Duntreath Estate has offered a site for the project, behind the railway track on the outskirts of the village.
All allotments will be within walking distance of the village and there will also be a community garden.
A spokesperson for the group, said: “We think this shows real community spirit, generosity and forward thinking in today’s climate. The supporters of the allotment are very grateful and look forward to developing this relationship with Duntreath Estate.
“We believe that the project will have many benefits for the community.
“It will allow people to grow food locally, enable more social interaction, encourage intergenerational relationships, increase biodiversity, lower the carbon footprint for the village and help with skills development and educational projects for the local school and nursery.
“Throughout all the consultation events, we have listened to any concerns that have been raised in the village and robust allotment rules have been adopted to address these concerns.
“There are a small number of people who are in opposition with the project and many false rumours abound the villages. We would invite anyone with any concerns to refer to the website for info and/or contact the group to discuss any concerns.”
Linda Mowat from Blanefield says many villagers have concerns about the plans. She said: “We are worried that there isn’t adequate parking at the allotments and the village may become congested with cars.
“They plan to erect deer fences which can have a negative impact on the surrounding environment. Pesticides could also seep into the River Blane and pollute the water.
“The majority of villagers don’t want the allotments, it’s just this group who are hellbent on getting them.”
The Blane Valley Allotment Group have applied for planning permission and would appreciate support by writing to the planning department.
